Write your characters
Create the handwriting samples you need for your document.
Turn your own handwriting into a digital font, then upload the TTF or OTF file to AI Text to Handwriting. Use your custom font to convert typed text into handwritten-style pages.
AI Text to Handwriting does not create the font file itself. This guide shows how to create a handwriting font with a third-party font creation tool and use it in the editor.
Workflow
Create the handwriting samples you need for your document.
Use a font creation tool to convert samples into a font file.
Load the finished font through the editor font controls.
Convert typed text into handwritten pages and download the result.
Steps
Start with a handwriting font template or character sheet. Write the uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and language characters that you expect to use.
Use consistent-sized writing and try to keep the letters aligned on the same baseline. Use a dark pen and avoid heavily smudged or faint writing.
Digitize the completed character sheet with a scanner or a clear, well-lit photo. Keep the page flat, avoid shadows, and make sure every character is easy to read.
If the font creation tool provides its own template or image requirements, follow those requirements. Use the highest practical scan quality supported by the font creation tool.
Upload your handwriting samples to a font creation tool that can export a TrueType Font (TTF) or OpenType Font (OTF) file. Follow the tool's instructions to map each handwritten character to the correct letter, number, or punctuation mark.
A tool such as Calligraphr can help convert handwritten character samples into a usable font file. It is a third-party service, so its account requirements, pricing, and available features may change over time.
Visit CalligraphrOpen the AI Text to Handwriting editor and find the font controls. Choose the upload option, then select your custom TTF or OTF file.
After the font loads, select it in the editor and preview a short sample of text. Check whether the letters, numbers, and punctuation marks appear correctly before creating a longer document.
Open the font controlsA custom font may need different font size and spacing settings from the built-in fonts. If letters look too close together or too far apart, adjust the available letter spacing or word spacing controls.
You can also adjust the page settings, ink color, and paper style to match the appearance you want.
Tune the page settingsImportant
A custom handwriting font can make typed text use the shapes of your own handwritten characters. However, it does not automatically reproduce every natural variation found in real handwriting.
Most font files use the same character design each time a letter appears. The final result may therefore look more consistent than handwriting written by hand. The quality also depends on the clarity of your handwriting sample and the characters included in the font file.
If a font does not contain a particular letter, number, symbol, or language character, that character may not display as expected. Create a font with the characters you need and test it with a short sample before exporting a full document.

Tool
Calligraphr is one option for converting handwritten character samples into a digital font file. It provides a template-based workflow and can export font files for use in compatible applications.
You can also use another font creation tool as long as it produces a valid TTF or OTF file.
Visit CalligraphrTroubleshooting
Make sure the file uses the TTF or OTF format and that it is a valid font file. Try creating the font again with the font creation tool if the file cannot be loaded.
The font file may not contain every character used in your text. Add the missing characters to your handwriting template and create a new font file.
Some handwriting fonts contain wide character spacing. Adjust the letter spacing or word spacing controls in the editor and preview the result again.
Adjust the font size and page layout settings in the editor. Different custom fonts can have different character proportions and may require different settings.
A font reproduces the character designs contained in the font file. It does not automatically reproduce every variation, pressure change, or spacing decision made when writing by hand.

The current editor uses an uploaded custom font in the current browser session. It is not currently described as a permanent cloud font library, so you may need to upload it again after refreshing or reopening the page.
